Frequently Asked Questions

How does the hayfever injection work?

Hayfever injection is a long-acting corticosteroid. It works by suppressing the immune system's exaggerated response to pollen, reducing inflammation in the nasal passages and airways, and decreasing mucus production. By addressing inflammation systemically, it can relieve multiple symptoms at once — including sneezing, itchy eyes, blocked nose and sinus headaches.

How quickly does the hayfever jab start working?

Many patients notice an improvement within 48 hours of their hayfever injection. The full benefit typically takes 7–10 days to develop. If symptoms persist after 10 days, your GP can review whether additional treatment is needed.

Why isn't the hayfever injection available on the NHS?

Steroid injections for hayfever are not routinely offered on the NHS because hayfever is not considered life-threatening, steroids carry potential risks, and alternative treatments (tablets and sprays) are usually recommended first. Private clinics such as ours may offer injections once it has been assessed that standard treatments have failed and the patient is clinically suitable.

Who is suitable for a private hayfever injection?
You may be suitable if you are over 18, suffer from severe seasonal allergic rhinitis, standard over-the-counter treatments have not provided adequate relief, and you do not have any contraindicated medical conditions. Suitability is always confirmed by a GP during your consultation.
Can I have more than one hayfever injection in a season?
Most patients only require one injection per season. In rare cases, a second dose may be considered at least 14 days after the first — but only if clinically appropriate. Repeated steroid use must always be carefully evaluated to minimise risk.
Does the hayfever injection cure hayfever permanently?
No. The injection controls symptoms during the active pollen season but does not cure hayfever permanently. It is an allergic condition, and symptoms are likely to return in future seasons. Many patients return each year for a single seasonal injection.
Can I still take antihistamines after the injection?
Yes. In some cases, antihistamines or nasal sprays may still be used if mild breakthrough symptoms occur. Your GP will provide personalised advice based on your symptom profile.
Is the injection painful?
The injection is given into the upper buttock muscle and feels similar to a routine vaccination — most patients describe a brief pinching sensation. There may be mild soreness at the injection site for 24–48 hours afterwards.
Do I need a GP referral to book?
No referral is required. You can book directly with our private GP clinic in Birmingham online or by calling 0121 798 0729.
Can I book a same-day hayfever jab in Birmingham?

Same-day consultations are often available during pollen season, subject to GP availability. We recommend booking early during peak months (April to July) to secure your preferred appointment time.

What alternatives are there if I'm not suitable for the injection?

If the injection is not appropriate for you, your GP may recommend prescription-strength antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays, eye drops, combination therapy, or personalised allergy management advice. Your treatment plan will always be tailored to your individual needs and medical history.

How much does a hayfever injection cost in Birmingham?

The hayfever injection treatment is £75. A prescription charge of £25 applies if required. There are no hidden fees.
