HIV Testing Derby

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) attacks the body's immune system, making it harder to fight off infections and disease. It's spread mainly through sexual contact, though sharing needles, mother-to-child transmission and blood transfusions are also routes. Early diagnosis matters, so testing is a core part of prevention and management. At our Derby clinic, we offer same-day HIV testing appointments with confidential, next-day results. No NHS waiting list, no referral needed.

What is HIV?

HIV attacks the CD4 cells that help the body fight infection. As it progresses, it can destroy enough CD4 cells that the body can no longer fight off illness, which is when HIV can lead to AIDS.

HIV is spread mainly through sexual contact with someone who has the virus, but also through sharing needles, from mother to child during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and through blood transfusions.

What are the symptoms of HIV?

Early symptoms are often mild and easily mistaken for flu, fever, headache, muscle aches and rash. Sore throat, swollen glands and fatigue are also common. Not everyone who contracts HIV experiences symptoms, which is exactly why testing matters rather than waiting to feel unwell.

HIV Testing at our Derby clinic

There are a few types of HIV test:

  1. Antibody tests check for antibodies to HIV in blood or saliva. It can take a few weeks after infection for antibodies to build up, so these aren't accurate immediately.
  2. Antigen tests check for the HIV antigen itself and can pick up infection earlier than antibody tests.
  3. Combination tests check for both, giving the earliest reliable window for detection.

Our Derby clinic uses a combination test, so patients get the earliest accurate result available. If you'd like to talk through your risk factors first, you can book a consultation with one of our private GPs at the Derby clinic.

How can HIV be treated?

There's no cure, but early diagnosis and treatment let people with HIV live long, healthy lives through antiretroviral therapy (ART), which suppresses the virus and lets the immune system recover. Regular monitoring of viral load and CD4 count is part of ongoing care. Lifestyle steps that help alongside treatment:

  • Quitting smoking.
  • Eating well.
  • Staying active.
  • Cutting stress.
  • Avoiding alcohol and drugs.
