Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best treatment for anxiety and depression?

The best treatment depends on the individual, but common evidence-based options include:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
  • Medication, such as SSRIs or SNRIs
  • Lifestyle changes, like improving sleep, reducing alcohol, and increasing physical activity

In many cases, a combination of therapy and medication offers the best outcome.

What type of doctor treats anxiety and depression?

At Private Medical Clinic, you can be seen by:

  • A private GP with experience in mental health
  • A psychiatrist, if more specialist care is needed

Initial assessments are usually conducted by a GP or mental health practitioner, who may then refer you for therapy or prescribe treatment directly.

Can I get medication for anxiety and depression without a referral?

Yes. We offer private consultations without a referral, and if medication is suitable, our clinicians can prescribe antidepressants such as sertraline, fluoxetine, citalopram, or others based on your symptoms.

Will my treatment be confidential?

Absolutely. All consultations, prescriptions, and communications are strictly confidential, in line with GMC and CQC regulations. We do not share your details unless you ask us to — for example, if you'd like us to inform your NHS GP.

How quickly can I start treatment?
You can usually be seen same-day or within 24–48 hours. If treatment is recommended, prescriptions can be issued immediately and delivered to your home or collected locally.
Do I have to take medication for anxiety or depression?

Not necessarily. We respect your preferences and offer alternatives such as:

  • Referrals for counselling or talking therapy
  • Lifestyle guidance and mental wellbeing support
  • Regular reviews to track progress without relying on medication
What are the signs I need treatment for anxiety or depression?

If you're experiencing any of the following for more than two weeks, it may be time to seek help:

  • Persistent low mood or hopelessness
  • Fatigue, poor concentration, or lack of motivation
  • Panic attacks, restlessness, or irritability
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Withdrawal from relationships or work
  • Feeling overwhelmed or emotionally numb
Can you refer me to a private psychiatrist or therapist?

Yes. If specialist care is needed, we can arrange a private referral to a consultant psychiatrist, psychotherapist, or counsellor with expertise in depression and anxiety disorders.
