What are Genital Warts?

Genital warts are a manifestation of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a diverse family of viruses with over 100 different types affecting various parts of the body. While around 30 types of HPV can affect the genital skin, a staggering 90% of genital warts are attributed to two specific strains: types 6 and 11. These warts may emerge as small, painless growths, appearing either individually or in clusters that resemble a cauliflower-like texture. While typically painless, itching and inflammation can occur, sometimes leading to minor bleeding.

Where can Genital Warts occur?

  • Around the vulva (the opening of the vagina)
  • Around the cervix (the neck of the womb)
  • Inside the vagina
  • Around or inside the anus
  • On the upper thighs
  • Anywhere on the penis
  • On the scrotum
  • Inside the urethra (in individuals with a penis)

How can Genital Warts be prevented?

Transmission of genital warts most commonly occurs through skin-to-skin contact with an individual carrying the HPV strains responsible for these warts. Notably, transmission can happen even if the warts are not visibly present. Common modes of transmission include vaginal and anal sex, genital-to-genital contact, sharing sex toys, and, albeit rarely, oral sex.

While it’s challenging to fully prevent genital warts, several steps can reduce the risk:

  • Consistent condom use can offer protection, although the virus can still spread via skin contact in the genital area.
  • The HPV vaccine, such as Gardasil 9, guards against several HPV strains, including those responsible for most genital warts and cervical cancers.
  • The HPV vaccine program, aimed at young individuals aged 12 to 13, involves two doses of the vaccine administered at least 6 months apart.

Genital Warts (HPV) Testing

If you suspect you may have genital warts or have been in contact with someone who does, seeking medical evaluation is vital. At Private Medical Clinic, our experienced professionals can provide accurate diagnosis and guidance.

Diagnosing genital warts generally involves a visual examination of the affected area. Occasionally, a more detailed examination may be necessary to assess the presence of internal warts within the vagina or anus.

How can Genital Warts be treated?

Treatment for genital warts is typically offered when visible warts are present. At Private Medical Clinic, we offer two main treatment approaches:

  1. Topical Treatment: This involves applying specialised creams or lotions to the warts. It is particularly effective for softer warts.
  2. Destruction of Tissue: Hard or rough-feeling warts can be treated by freezing, heating, or surgical removal.
