What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels made from hyaluronic acid (HA) — a naturally occurring substance in the skin that attracts and binds water. Over time, our natural HA levels decline, leading to volume loss, sagging skin, wrinkles, and hollow features.

Dermal filler injections help to:
  • Replenish lost volume and smooth wrinkles
  • Define and contour facial features
  • Improve hydration and skin elasticity
  • Restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance
At Private Medical Clinic, we use tailored treatment plans to achieve subtle, elegant results that work in harmony with your natural facial anatomy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dermal fillers painful?

Dermal filler injections are generally very well tolerated, and most patients experience only mild discomfort during treatment. At Private Medical Clinic, we use premium fillers that are pre-mixed with lidocaine, a local anaesthetic that helps numb the area during injection. For more sensitive areas such as the lips or under eyes, we also apply a topical numbing cream beforehand to further enhance your comfort.

The sensation is typically described as a slight pinch or pressure. For treatments using a cannula instead of a needle — such as jawline or cheek fillers — discomfort is even further reduced. The entire procedure usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, and you’ll be able to resume most activities immediately afterwards.

How long do dermal fillers last?

The longevity of your results depends on the treatment area, product used, and your individual metabolism. On average:

  • Cheek fillers: 12–18 months
  • Jawline and chin fillers: 12–24 months
  • Nasolabial folds & marionette lines: 6–12 months
  • Under-eye (tear trough) fillers: 9–12 months
  • Lip fillers (if performed): 6–9 months

We use only high-grade hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm and Teoxane, known for their durability and biocompatibility. For optimal and lasting results, we often recommend top-up or maintenance treatments once or twice per year.

What areas can be treated with dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are incredibly versatile and can be used to:

  • Restore volume in the cheeks, temples, and chin
  • Soften deep lines such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Define the jawline and reduce the appearance of jowls
  • Improve tired eyes with under-eye (tear trough) filler
  • Perform non-surgical nose reshaping (rhinoplasty)
  • Hydrate and subtly enhance lip volume and shape
  • Lift and rejuvenate the face via the 8-point lift technique

Each treatment plan is fully customised to your facial anatomy and goals, with a focus on natural, proportionate results.

Can dermal fillers be reversed if needed?

Yes. One of the major advantages of hyaluronic acid-based fillers is that they are fully reversible. If you're not satisfied with the results or experience any complications, the filler can be safely dissolved using an injectable enzyme called hyaluronidase.

This treatment must only be performed by trained medical professionals, as it also breaks down the body’s natural hyaluronic acid. We reserve this option for rare cases, but it offers peace of mind for patients trying fillers for the first time.

Are there any side effects?

Most side effects are minor and temporary, such as:

  • Redness or tenderness at the injection site
  • Swelling or puffiness (especially around the eyes or lips)
  • Mild bruising, which can last a few days
  • Rarely, small lumps that resolve with gentle massage or time

These symptoms typically resolve on their own. We provide comprehensive aftercare advice and are available for follow-up if you have any concerns.

How soon will I see results after dermal filler treatment?

Results are visible immediately after treatment, though it’s normal to experience some initial swelling or minor bruising at the injection site. These effects usually subside within 2–3 days, with final, settled results typically noticeable by day 5–7.

Fillers not only restore volume instantly but continue to integrate with your tissue over the first week, leaving your skin smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking. Most patients are thrilled with the visible difference immediately, especially when treating areas like the nasolabial folds, cheeks, or under eyes.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Yes — when administered by qualified medical professionals, dermal fillers are very safe. All treatments at Private Medical Clinic are performed by GMC-registered doctors in CQC-regulated medical environments. We use only FDA- and CE-approved hyaluronic acid fillers from trusted brands.

While side effects are rare, some temporary swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site is normal. More serious complications are extremely uncommon and usually related to poor technique or unregulated environments. That’s why it’s essential to choose an experienced and medically qualified provider like us.

In the rare event of any issue, we are fully trained to administer hyaluronidase, an enzyme that can safely dissolve the filler.

What happens during the consultation?

Your dermal filler journey begins with a 1:1 consultation with one of our experienced doctors. During this appointment, we will:
  • Discuss your goals and concerns
  • Assess your facial anatomy and skin condition
  • Review your medical history to ensure suitability
  • Explain the treatment options, products, and outcomes
  • Outline aftercare and any potential side effects
  • Provide a personalised quote based on your needs
You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and, if you’re happy to proceed, treatment can usually be carried out on the same day.

Can I combine fillers with other treatments like Botox?

Absolutely. Dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections (Botox) often work beautifully together. Botox targets dynamic lines (caused by muscle movement), while fillers restore volume loss and soften static lines.

Many patients benefit from this combination approach — often referred to as the “liquid facelift” — to achieve full-face rejuvenation with natural, balanced results. Our doctors will advise on the ideal treatment sequence and timing based on your goals.
