Memory Assessment & Dementia: Introducing Our New Service

Memory Assessment & Dementia

We are proud to announce the launch of our Memory Assessment and Dementia Service, designed to provide comprehensive and expert care for individuals experiencing memory concerns or suspected dementia. Early detection and management are crucial for maintaining cognitive health and improving quality of life. Our service is structured to offer a thorough and compassionate approach to diagnosis and treatment, with locations in Birmingham, London, Newcastle, Surrey and Oxford.

What Does the Memory Assessment & Dementia Service Include?

Our Memory Assessment and Dementia Service includes:

  1. GP Consultation for Screening and KML Blood Tests
The process begins with a GP consultation that includes cognitive screening tests to assess memory function. Additionally, KML blood tests are performed to rule out underlying medical conditions that might be contributing to memory loss.
  2. Referral for MRI Head Scan
An MRI head scan may be recommended as part of the diagnostic process to check for any structural abnormalities in the brain. An MRI provides a detailed image, allowing for a more accurate diagnosis. We provide a referral letter for this scan, and while the MRI is not included in the service price, we can guide you through the process. MRI scans typically cost around £300.
  3. Consultation with Dr. Rashi Negi, Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist
Following the MRI scan, you will have a consultation with Dr. Rashi Negi, a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist who specialises in diagnosing and managing dementia. This consultation will include a full evaluation of your memory concerns, a diagnosis if necessary, and personalised recommendations for treatment and ongoing care.

The entire service is priced at £1295 (excluding the MRI scan), offering a comprehensive and thorough pathway to diagnosis and management.

What Are the Early Signs of Memory Loss or Dementia?

Memory loss and cognitive decline can manifest in subtle ways. Some of the early signs to watch for include:

  • Frequent forgetfulness: Difficulty remembering recent events or conversations.
  • Difficulty performing familiar tasks: Struggling with tasks that used to be routine.
  • Confusion about time or place: Losing track of dates, seasons, or where you are.
  • Misplacing things: Placing items in unusual locations and being unable to retrace steps.
  • Poor judgement or decision-making: Exhibiting uncharacteristic poor judgement or decision-making abilities.

What Causes Memory Loss or Dementia?

Memory loss can result from various factors, including:

  • Age: Cognitive decline naturally increases with age, but not all memory loss is a sign of dementia.
  • Genetic Factors: Some forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease, have genetic links.
  • Medical Conditions: Chronic illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, or brain injuries can contribute to memory loss.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Poor diet, lack of exercise, and even chronic stress can increase the risk of developing dementia.
  • Other Conditions: Depression, vitamin deficiencies (especially B12), and thyroid issues can also contribute to memory problems.

Treatment Options for Memory Loss and Dementia

While there is currently no cure for dementia, various treatments and interventions can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life:

  • Medications: Drugs such as cholinesterase inhibitors (e.g., Donepezil) can help improve cognitive function in certain types of dementia.
  • Cognitive Therapy: Memory exercises, games, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can help maintain cognitive skills.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments: A healthy diet, regular exercise, and social engagement are all proven to help slow the progression of memory loss.
  • Support Services: Memory care programs, support groups, and counselling for both patients and caregivers provide emotional and practical support.

Dr. Rashi Negi has served as Clinical Director for three years, where she spearheaded initiatives such as 'locality memory clinics' and played a key role in projects like 'frailty hubs,' which are now well-established in East Staffordshire, benefiting the local population. Recently appointed as Associate Medical Director for Quality Improvement, she aims to develop robust clinical care systems to enhance both the quality of care and patient satisfaction.

Dr. Negi is deeply committed to promoting the importance of mental health and has undertaken numerous initiatives focused on dementia prevention, particularly emphasising brain health in the early stages of patients' journeys.

Identifying memory issues and diagnosing dementia early allows for more effective management and planning. Early intervention can help slow progression and provide patients and families with the resources they need to cope with the challenges ahead.
