What Happens During Your GP Home Visit?

When your GP arrives, they bring a portable medical kit and are fully prepared to carry out a comprehensive consultation and physical examination. They will take a detailed medical history, review your current medications, assess your symptoms, and agree the most appropriate next steps with you.

Depending on your clinical needs, your doctor may carry out blood tests and other investigations during the visit, write a private prescription, arrange specialist referrals, or provide a sick note, medical certificate, or fit-to-work certificate.

Book Your Private GP Home Visit in Three Simple Steps

  • 1. Book: Call our team to confirm your location, describe your symptoms, and book the earliest available visit. We'll give you your doctor's expected arrival window at the time of booking.
  • 2. Your Doctor Visits: Your GMC-registered private GP arrives fully equipped for a comprehensive consultation, physical examination, and any appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • 3. Your Care Plan: Your doctor explains their findings, answers your questions, and arranges any prescriptions, referrals, certificates, or follow-up care you need during or after the visit.

Before Your Doctor Arrives

To make the most of your appointment, it helps to have the following ready:

  • A clear, well-lit space where your GP can examine you.
  • A list of your current medications, including dosages.
  • Any relevant medical letters, test results, or previous consultation notes.
  • Details of your medical history, including any allergies.

What Can a Doctor Do During a Home Visit?

More than most people expect. Our home visiting GPs bring portable diagnostic equipment and, in many cases, can begin treatment, take blood samples, or arrange urgent investigations during a single visit. You receive the same clinical quality you would in a Private GP appointment — without leaving home.

During your home visit, your GP may:

Diagnose and treat a wide range of acute and long-term conditions.
Carry out a comprehensive physical examination.
Take blood samples and carry out investigations during the visit, samples are couriered to our laboratory, with most results available within 24 hours.
Perform urine tests and swabs where clinically appropriate.
Issue a private prescription for medication.
Review your current medications and treatment plan.
Arrange specialist referrals for further assessment.
Issue sick notes, fit-to-work certificates, and medical certificates.
Advise on follow-up care via an online GP consultation or clinic appointment.
Develop a personalised treatment and recovery plan.

Important: Home visits are for non-emergency medical concerns. If you are experiencing chest pain, suspected stroke, difficulty breathing, or severe bleeding, call 999 immediately. Controlled drugs cannot be prescribed during a home visit.

Who Is a GP Home Visit Suitable For?

Private GP home visits suit any patient who would benefit from being assessed at home, or who finds travelling to a clinic impractical. Our service is a good fit if you:

  • Are too unwell to travel comfortably.
  • Are recovering from surgery or illness.
  • Have reduced mobility or a disability.
  • Are arranging care for an elderly parent or relative.
  • Need your children seen without a clinic visit.
  • Are a busy professional and prefer a consultation at home or work.
  • Are a hotel guest or international visitor.
  • Live in a care home and need dedicated GP support.
  • Prefer to avoid busy waiting rooms due to anxiety.
  • Would like your doctor to assess multiple household members in one visit.

Not sure whether a home visit or an Online GP Consultation would suit you better? Our team is happy to advise before you book.

Blood Tests During Your Home Visit

Blood tests can be taken during your home visit in most cases. Your doctor brings the necessary equipment, takes a blood sample during the consultation, and samples are couriered directly to our laboratory with most results available within 24 hours. Available blood tests include:

  • Full blood count.
  • Thyroid function.
  • Hormone panels.
  • Vitamin levels (including vitamin D and B12).
  • Cholesterol.
  • Liver and kidney function.
  • A range of additional panels depending on your clinical needs.

Laboratory fees are charged separately from your home visit consultation fee. Your GP will advise on which tests are clinically appropriate before proceeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a private GP home visit?

A private GP home visit is a full medical consultation carried out by a GMC-registered private GP at your home, hotel, workplace, or care home. Your doctor will take a medical history, carry out a physical examination, and arrange any prescriptions, tests, or referrals you need. It offers the same clinical standard as a clinic appointment, without you needing to travel.

How quickly can I book a same-day doctor home visit?

Same-day home visits are available in most of our coverage areas. Call our team before midday for the best chance of a same-day appointment. We'll confirm your doctor's expected arrival window at the time of booking.

Which areas do you cover?

We cover areas within approximately 30 minutes of each of our eight clinic locations: London, Birmingham, Derby, Leicester, Newcastle, Oxford, Sutton Coldfield, and Bournemouth. If you're unsure whether we cover your area, please call and we'll check availability.

Can I request a home visit for an elderly relative?

Absolutely. Our elderly home visit GP service is specifically suited to older adults, care home residents, and patients with mobility concerns. We work with carers and family members and can co-ordinate with the patient's NHS GP where appropriate.

Can a doctor visit my hotel?

Yes. Our GPs regularly visit hotel guests across the UK. Simply call our team, provide your hotel name and room number, and we'll arrange a visit at the most convenient time. This service is popular with both UK and international visitors.

Can I get a prescription during a home visit?

Yes. Your private GP can issue a private prescription during the home visit where clinically appropriate. The fee is £25. Prescriptions can be taken to any pharmacy, or we can advise on the nearest pharmacy to your location.

Can you take blood tests at home?

Yes. Blood tests and a range of other investigations can be completed during your home visit in most cases. Your doctor brings the necessary equipment, takes a blood sample on the spot, and samples are couriered to our laboratory with most results available within 24 hours. Laboratory fees are charged separately from the consultation fee.

Can I get a sick note during a home visit?

Yes. Your GP can issue a sick note (fit note) or medical certificate during the home visit where clinically appropriate. This is included within the £100 medical certificates charge.

How much does a private GP home visit cost?

Our private GP home visits start from £295. This compares favourably with the UK market range of £250–£500. A travel surcharge may apply for visits outside our standard 30-minute clinic radius. Prescriptions are £25, and medical certificates or specialist referral letters are £100.

Do I need private health insurance?

No. Our home visit service is available to all patients on a pay-as-you-go basis. If you do have private health insurance, it may cover some or all costs — check with your insurer before booking.

Does seeing a private GP affect my NHS registration?

No. Seeing a private GP does not affect your NHS registration or your right to NHS care. You should remain registered with your NHS practice. With your permission, your private GP can share consultation notes with your NHS doctor to keep your records complete.

Can children have a home visit?

Yes. Our GPs are experienced in paediatric care and can see patients of all ages, including infants and children. Home visits can be more comfortable and less distressing for young patients than a clinic visit.

Can I book an out-of-hours GP home visit?

Please contact our team to discuss out-of-hours availability. Same-day visits are available during clinic hours. Out-of-hours and weekend availability may vary by location — our team will confirm what is possible for your area.

What conditions cannot be treated at home?

Home visits are not suitable for medical emergencies. If you experience chest pain, suspected stroke, difficulty breathing, severe allergic reaction, or uncontrolled bleeding, call 999 immediately. Our GPs also cannot prescribe controlled drugs during a home visit.

Can I book a follow-up visit?

Yes. If ongoing home-based care is appropriate, we can arrange further visits. Follow-up care can also be provided via an online GP consultation or at your nearest PMC clinic — whichever is more convenient.

Can I choose my doctor?

We will always try to accommodate preferences for continuity of care. Please let our team know when booking if you have seen a specific GP previously and would like the same doctor where possible.

What is included in the consultation fee?

The £295 home visit fee includes the consultation, a full physical examination, diagnosis and treatment advice, a personalised care plan, and any medication reviews. Prescriptions, medical certificates, and laboratory tests are charged separately.

How long does a home visit take?

Up to 45 minutes. If you need a longer appointment — for example, to discuss multiple concerns or for elderly care — please let our team know when booking and we will arrange accordingly.

What should I do in a medical emergency?

Call 999 immediately. A private GP home visit is not a substitute for emergency care. If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call 111 for guidance.
